The investment from Dayton Recovery Plan funds was OK’d following the City Commission’s approval of a project award, recovery plan liaison Jamie Kenny said in a prepared statement.

Njoy has been feeding the homeless and hungry in Dayton for more than 10 years. The new building space will allow the organization to expand its efforts.

Funding will be provided through the recovery plan’s $7.3 million Aiding Community and Small Business Recovery component. This part of the plan focuses on supporting community health and wellness, assisting small businesses and organizations, and providing educational opportunities.

The Dayton Recovery Plan is a $138 million framework for community COVID relief and investment for the future, made possible by the federal American Rescue Plan Act.

Njoy plans to use the funds to build a new structure at its current West Riverview Avenue location to serve as a multi-purpose community resource center. The organization is seeking additional funding to help with design- and construction-related costs.

Other vital programs and services will be supported including low-cost or pro bono legal services, parenting classes for youth, free health screenings, and clothing/shoes giveaways.

Njoy also offers food distribution services to adults with disabilities and special needs.

The organization has also partnered with a school to set-up office space in the new building to offer job training/opportunities for future home health aides. Within the first year, the new building will extend the organization’s outreach and enable its programs to serve an additional 4,800 guests.
