Dayton loses at UMass, suffers third loss in four games

AMHERST, MA — The struggles continued for the University of Dayton men’s basketball team Wednesday night.

The Flyers lost to the Massachusetts Minutemen, 76-72, at the Mullins Center in Amherst, MA.

Nate Santos led UD with 18 points while Javon Bennett added 17. Zed Key scored 16 points.

Dayton falls to 11-5 overall, and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10. They have lost three of their last four games.

Enoch Cheeks and Malachi Smith combined to score one point on 1-11 shooting, including 0-6 from three-point range.

UMass outrebounded Dayton, 38-26, and scored 46 points in the paint. The Minutemen’s bench outscored the Flyers, 25-14, and shot 19-20 from the foul line.

UD led by as much as 10 points, 22-12, with 10:36 left in the first half after a Posh Alexander three-pointer. UMass cut the deficit to 39-36 at the break.

The Minutemen went on a 7-0 run to start the second half to go ahead, 43-39. The Flyers came back as Alexander’s three-point play gave them a 56-51 lead with 10:35 to play.

UMass went on a 12-2 run that Daniel Rivera capped with a steal and dunk to them ahead, 63-58.

Bennett scored five straight points for Dayton to tie the game at 70-70 with 1:50 to play.

Rivera’s putback put the Minutemen up for good with 1:22 left, 72-70. They outscored UD, 6-2, to end the game.

Dayton’s next game will be on Jan. 15 when they host George Mason at the UD Arena at 7 p.m.
