Dayton man pleads not guilty in LaShonda Childs’ death

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 1:54 p.m. (Oct. 5):

Trendell Goodwin pleaded not guilty to the shooting death of LaShonda Childs Friday in Dayton Municipal Court.

Bond was set at $1 million dollars for Goodwin, who was charged with murder, felonious assault and improper discharge of a weapon Thursday.

A preliminary hearing for Goodwin was scheduled for Oct. 12.

INITIAL STORY:

The man accused of killing 17-year-old LaShonda Childs was charged with two counts of murder Thursday.

Trendell Goodwin, 28, is also facing three counts of felonious assault and two counts of improper discharge of a firearm, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

All of the charges have a three-year firearm specification.

Goodwin fired multiple rounds into a car that Childs and her boyfriend were in while parked on Stroop Avenue Tuesday, according to court documents.

Childs was struck and her boyfriend drove her to Grandview Medical Center, where she died early Wednesday morning.

Goodwin was taken into custody Tuesday evening.

Childs and Goodwin started dating last September, according to her family.

After Goodwin started showing abusive behavior, Childs tried to leave him, family said.

Childs and her family went to police for help related to Goodwin on multiple occasions, according to Montgomery County court records.
