Police responding to an unrelated call spotted Campbell driving at a high-rate of speed as he crashed into a fence and playground at the Dayton Boys Prep Academy near the intersection of West Second and Clemmer streets around 6:50 p.m. Sunday.

“This was daylight hours. Luckily for all involved the playground was empty,” said Lt. Jason Hall.  “There was significant damage to the playground.”

Campbell was found shot in the vehicle and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police believe the shooting happened near the intersection of North Antioch Street and West Second Street.

Police arrested Carson D. Barker, 33, in connection to the incident, according to a Dayton police incident report.

Barker was booked in the Montgomery County Jail on preliminary charges of felonious assault and weapon offenses, however Hall said homicide charges will be presented to the prosecutor’s office Tuesday.

Hall said the police department’s initial investigation showed the shooting was not random and was a result of a “long-running dispute” involving the victim and suspect.

Police said help from the community and witnesses led to the quick arrest.
