DAYTON — A Dayton man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing his son was sentenced to prison Wednesday.
Earl Shingleton, 57, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to murdering his son, Kevin L. Johnson, 29, in February, according to prosecutors.

According to court documents, Shingleton shot Johnson after an altercation inside their home on Wyoming Street in Dayton Feb. 5.
“While (Johnson) was sitting on the floor in the living room of the home, (Shingleton) retrieved a rifle from his bedroom,” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck said in a media release.
“After loading the weapon, (Shingleton) returned to the living room and fired a single shot, fatally striking (Johnson).”

In a 911 call on the day of the shooting, a woman who identified herself of a neighbor of Shingleton reported he came over to the neighbors house, asking for someone to call 911 saying ‘I just shot my son in the chest.’
Shingleton was indicted on charges Feb. 14 and entered a guilty plea to one count of murder May 7.

Today’s sentence means Shingleton will serve at least 15 years in prison before he would be eligible for consideration of parole.
