Conference awards Dayton’s Obi Toppin Player of the Week honors for fourth time

DAYTON — For the fourth time this season, Dayton’s Obi Toppin was awarded Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Toppin averaged 21 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games last week that helped the Flyers clinch the outright regular season title. Toppin made 10 of his 11 shots last Friday, for 23 total points, en route to the title-clinching win over Davidson.

This is the seventh time this season a Flyer was named conference player of the week. In addition to Toppin’s four awards, Jalen Crutcher was honored twice and Ibi Watson once.

Also on Monday, Dayton climbed to No. 3 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. The Flyers, winners of 18 straight games, reached their highest ranking since the 1955-56 season.

The Flyers finish up the regular season this week with two games. On Wednesday, Dayton travels to Rhode Island for a 9 p.m. tipoff against the Rams.

Saturday, the Flyers end the regular season at the University of Dayton Arena against George Washington at 7 p.m.

Next week, the Flyers will travel to Brooklyn at the number one seed for the Atlantic 10 Championship. While the opponent hasn’t been determined, the Flyers will play their first game Friday, March 16 at noon.
