One month ago today, nine people lost their lives in the tragedy at the Oregon District.

News Center 7's Mike Campbell spoke with community members and leaders on how the recovery continues and what happens next.

“I think it has a bright and wonderful future. I love the district, I’ve been coming here since I was a kid,” community member Audrey Carriera said. “I was here for the vigil, I was here for Gem City Shine.”

Mayor Nan Whaley and Police Chief Richard Biehl say they’re grateful and impressed with how the community has shown strength.

“That’s just kind of the spirit of what’s going on is Dayton takes care of Dayton and we’re going to take care of each other,” Whaley said.

They also told us what they’d want to see happen.

“Get something moved on common sense gun legislation in the state house and in Washington, D.C.,” Whaley said.

“I really think the last few weeks have also shown how critical it is to invest resources in prevention,” Biehl said.
