VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — A Dayton teen is in “serious but stable” condition after being hospitalized following a shooting inside the gymnasium of an Alabama church Friday night.
According to CBS 42, a CBS affiliate, the shooting happened at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vestavia Hills around 8:30 p.m.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints identified the teen as Michael Fauber, 18, of Dayton.
In a statement, church spokesman Sam Penrod said Fauber was a missionary serving in the Alabama Birmingham Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since the incident, Penrod has acted as Faubers’ family’s spokesperson.
“A weekly athletic activity was being held and basketball was being played in the cultural hall. At approximately 8:30 p.m., Elder Fauber spoke with an unknown individual who came into the building during the activity. A few moments later, Elder Fauber was shot multiple times. The shooter then fled,” Penrod wrote in the statement.

Fauber was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Church officials said he has undergone surgery. He is in “serious but stable condition.”
No one else was hurt during the incident.
Deputy Chief David Agee said at a press conference that the shooting appeared to be “unprovoked,” according to CBS 42.
Police are still looking for the shooter.
