Dayton-area teen shot at Alabama church returns home after being released from hospital

DAYTON — A Dayton teen who was shot in Alabama has been released from the hospital and is now home in Dayton with his family.

Michael Fauber, 18, a 2021 Beavercreek High School graduate, was shot multiple times while he was at the Alabama Birmingham Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vestavia Hills.

Fauber was recently released from the UAB Medical Center after he was shot earlier this month.

“We can’t begin to express how grateful we are to all who have offered kind thoughts, charitable acts, and sincere prayers on our behalf. We will never forget the staff of the UAB Medical Center who cared for Michael with incredible diligence and skill. Michael’s survival and recovery has been a literal miracle,” David and Rachel Fauber said in a statement Wednesday. “Just as we continue to pray for a full recovery for our son, we pray for healing for the young men accused in this crime and hope that the time will come when they will become a great credit to their families and community. Above all, we are thankful for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate this week. He saved our son, and for this we will be eternally grateful. "

Deputies in Alabama said they made two arrests connected to the shooting of a Dayton-area native at a church near Birmingham, Alabama earlier this month.

Courtney Lee Knight, 18, was identified as the suspected shooter and warrants for his arrest on a charge of attempted murder were filed. He was located and arrested Tuesday by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and he’s been booked in the Jefferson County Jail on a bond of $60,000, the spokesperson said.

A second man, identified as Cornelius Omar-James Knight, 22, was charged with hindering prosecution during the investigation and was also arrested. He was booked in the Jefferson County Jail on a bond of $15,000, the spokesperson said.
