Del Rio services: How will weather and road closures affect the public?

Snow will be falling this afternoon and evening as the public and officers from around the country gather to pay their respects to Dayton police Detective Jorge Del Rio.

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect for many counties today, and roads will be closed Tuesday for the procession following the funeral.

Here’s what you need to know:

Tonight’s public viewing

  • The viewing will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. at the University of Dayton Arena, 1801 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd.
  • During this time, snow showers also will begin to develop and may cause a messy evening commute for some.

Tuesday’s funeral and procession

  • The memorial service will begin at noon, and attendees are asked to arrive by 11:15 a.m. or earlier.
  • Parking will become open to the public at 9 a.m.; the general public entrance doors will open at 10 a.m.
  • During this time, snow flurries may linger through the first part of the day and roads will likely be a little messy.
  • The procession will start around 2:30 p.m. to carry Detective Del Rio through Dayton and surrounding communities to the private service.
  • In order to get students home beforehand, Kettering City Schools and Dayton Public Schools will dismiss two hours early and Oakwood City Schools will dismiss an hour early.
  • The procession will travel through Oakwood on Far Hills Avenue, limiting and eventually stopping travel starting at 3 p.m. and continuing for an hour. Wilmington Pike and Dorothy Lane also will be closed.
