2 shootings, 1 deadly, at Dayton apartment complex

Two shootings at the same apartment complex , including one deadly, occurred within hours of each other, according to public records.

Police first responded to a report of a shooting in the 5000 block of Northcrest Drive around 5:45 p.m. Monday.

Chendo Buford, 26, of Dayton was killed during the gunfire, according to Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger.

Initial reports indicate the shooting was characterized as a robbery, but details into the police investigation were not provided by investigators.

Just after midnight, police responded to a second shooting at a neighboring apartment.  A man was shot in the head there, court records show.

Police said they expect the victim from the second shooting to survive.

A Dayton police report shows while investigating the second shooting, police spoke to a woman that lived at the address where the initial shooting happened; however, police do not believe the crimes themselves are related.

According to court records, the second shooting happened after a boyfriend and girlfriend were “arguing about going inside after celebrating the life of ‘BJ’ who was killed several hours before the incident,” court records read.

Police have not said if the “BJ” referred to in court records is Buford.

Dayton Police said once the girlfriend and boyfriend entered the apartment, the girlfriend’s brother shot the boyfriend in the head.

The boyfriend was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment, however hospital officials were unable to provide a condition.

An arrest warrant was issued for James E. Smith, 24, on two counts of felonious assault and a weapons charge in connection to the second shooting, court records show.
