Deputies investigate death of Darke County Jail inmate

DARKE COUNTY — Deputies are investigating the death of an inmate at the Darke County Jail after the man was found dead in a jail cell Wednesday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

Roy R. Spurling, 26, of Arcanum, was found hanging in his cell during normal bed checks around 11 p.m. Wednesday, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said in a media release Thursday.

Attempts to resuscitate Spurling were unsuccessful by jail staff and medics that arrived at the scene, deputies said.

Spurling was had been in the jail since Nov. 1 on charges of felonious assault, aggravated burglary, and inducing panic, according to jail records.

Additional details were not available and the incident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
