Deputies scan Halloween candy in Greene County for ‘foreign objects’

GREENE COUNTY — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office allowed families to have their Halloween candy scanned to help make sure their candy is safe before they dig into it on Halloween.

Deputies opened the Greene County Courthouse on Trick or Treat night, Oct. 31, to scan candy through an electronic scanning machine.

Deputies did this to check candy for foreign objects. According to a release, deputies will only be able to check candy for foreign objects, as they do not have the equipment to scan for narcotics.

Greene County Sheriff Gene Fischer told New Center 7 that they department stopped doing scans roughly five years ago, but a warning from the state about marijuana being in the candy prompted them to bring it back.

“[The electronic scanning machine] will scan hard objects, a piece of metal, that may have been inserted in the candy,” Fischer said.

Fischer said deputies will be “studying” the candy to make sure nothing is pointing out.

The scanning was held from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Deputies said parents should continue to check the wrappers of all candy to make sure they have not been tampered with.
