DeWine vetoes bill that aimed to block future stay at home orders

COLUMBUS — Gov. Mike DeWine vetoed a bill Thursday that targeted the Ohio Department of Health’s power of public health orders, including blocking quarantines.

Senate Bill 311 called to limit the Director of Health’s order-issuing authority. This would allow the General Assembly to rescind any state public health orders, including quarantine and stay-at-home orders for those who are not ill or have not been directly exposed to COVID-19.

In his veto message, DeWine stated that the bill “is not in the best interest of protecting the health and safety of all Ohioans.”

The bill would limit the ODH’s power to make public health orders to contain any current and future spread of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.
