Districts taking extra measures to keep student-athletes cool

DAYTON — Fans had to take extra measures to stay cool at Thursday night’s football game at Welcome Stadium.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11, misting fans was just one of the ways Dayton Public Schools tried to keep players cool.

“We also have pre-packed ice packs just in case,” Victoria Jones, Chief of Athetics for Dayton Public School said. “We have a plan in place to where we’re going to have extra water breaks.”

Athletic Trainer Lashelle Davis-Ivery told me players started preparing for the heat Wednesday.

“Making sure they’re hydrating and well, so that the night before that they aren’t dehydrating as quickly when they’re out there,” Davis-Ivery, said.

And player’s family are glad to see the focus on safety.

“It’s not always about winning. It’s about making sure that the athletes, the people that are out there competing against each other, win with the fact that they know they’re being protected as well by their coaches,” Rodney Crawford, grandparent said.
