A dog identified as a German Shepherd that attacked an Arcanum postal carrier was shot to death by a bystander when attempts to subdue the animal failed, the Darke County Sheriff's Office said.

The dog broke away from its handler Saturday afternoon at a residence in the 6100 block of state Route 722 in Ithaca, where the postal carrier had just delivered a package, our news partner at the Early Bird reported.

The dog's owner was injured as well when he tried to separate the dog from the postal carrier.

The postal worker, who suffered non-life threatening injuries to her legs, back and arms, was treated at the scene and then taken to Wayne HealthCare.

The resident of the property and owner of the dog was treated on scene as well, but turned down a trip to a medical facility. He was later taken by private vehicle to Wayne HealthCare where he was treated for bites to his arm, according to the sheriff's office.
