Driver’s license reinstatement program runs through August in Montgomery County

DAYTON — The Montgomery County Child Support Enforcement Agency is giving parents a chance to get their driving privileges back through a special reinstatement program during the month of August, according to a media release.

The lights at the Montgomery Administration Building will also be turning green now through August 6 to begin Child Support Awareness month.

Drivers who’ve had their licenses suspended due to non-payment of child support can have the suspension lifted by paying one month of back support instead of the standard three months, the release said.

“The pandemic has caused many parents to fall behind on their child support payments and we want to work with them to restore their licenses so they can get back to work to support their children,” said Sarah Fields, Montgomery County’s Assistant Director for Child Support.

The program is not a debt forgiveness, but a chance for parents to re-engage to help restore driving and earning capabilities for the sake of their children, according to Montgomery County.

“We know parents want to support their children but may need help figuring out a repayment that works for everyone involved,” Fields said. “This reinstatement opportunity reopens the lines of communications between CSEA and parents and allows us to work together to find solutions for their children.”

Last year, 44 people took advantage of the reinstatement opportunity, resulting in $12,000 being collected. Montgomery County now leads Ohio’s largest six counties in collections on arrears and is second in collections on current support, according to the release.

The reinstatement opportunity will run all month long.
