Dry conditions can lead to soaring temperatures

MIAMI VALLEY — Did you know soil moisture impacts both temperatures and precipitation? The summer season has brought extremely warm temperatures and abnormally dry conditions to the Miami Valley.

Typically, incoming solar radiation will bounce off soil moisture leading to evaporation, which then leads to an increase in temperatures.

When there are drought conditions, incoming solar radiation hits dry soil and there is no moisture to be evaporated.

This means temperatures have the potential to be above normal, which is exactly what is happening this week.

The average temperature for this time of the year is 76 degrees. Highs will continue to push into the middle 80s.

Unfortunately, the Miami Valley will stay clear of the much-needed rain this week.
