A Troy man was identified as the driver of a car that crashed and wrapped around a pole on West National Road in Vandalia Sunday night.

James McClellan, 51, was killed following the single-vehicle crash in the 1000 block of West National Road, between Helke Road and Peters Pike, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

The car was traveling east on West National Road when it went off the right side of the road and crashed into a utility pole on the driver’s side, Sgt. Jason Cadle of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The car then wrapped around the pole, trapping McClellan inside the wreckage, Cadle said. He had to be extricated from the passenger side and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Excessive speed and slick roads are being investigated as possible factors in the crash, according to state troopers.
