Veterans Day 2022: Local freebies for service members and community ceremonies

News Center 7 would like to thank all veterans and currently active servicepeople for their diligence and sacrifice in protecting this nation.

To show our thanks, WHIO has compiled a comprehensive list of all the freebies and celebrations available in your local area on November 11th.

These free goods and services are only available to veterans or active-duty service members.

Cedarville University

  • The ceremony will include:
    • Wind Symphony’s musical performance
    • Lunch for veterans
    • Dr. Jonathan Burson, assistant professor of finance and an Air Force veteran, opening speech
    • Dr. Daryl Smith, associate professor of management and an Air Force veteran, closing speech and prayer
  • Free and open to the public. Reserved parking will be available for veterans in front of the Callan Athletic Center. The event will also be live-streamed and available through the Cedarville University Chapel Archive
  • Where: Dixon Ministry Center
  • When: 10 a.m.

City of Centerville

  • The ceremony will include:
    • Color guard presentations from Centerville VFW Post 9550, Centerville Police Department, and Washington Township Fire Department Honor Guards
    • Centerville Community Band’s musical performance
    • Wreath laying ceremony
    • Centerville Mayor Brooks Compton’s speech
    • A keynote address by Col. Ariel Batungbacal, Commander of the National Air and Space Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base
    • Special surprise for a local veteran.
  • Where: Veterans Memorial at Stubbs Park.
  • When: 11 a.m.

City of Kettering

  • The ceremony will include:
    • The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. posting the colors
    • Fairmont High School’s Symphonic Chorale’s musical performance
  • Where: Delco Park Veterans Memorial Plaza
  • When: 11 a.m.

City of Trotwood

  • Where: Trotwood Community and Cultural Arts Center
  • When: 11 a.m.

Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care

  • The recognition ceremony will feature Miss Ohio singing “National Anthem” and “God Bless America,” a luncheon, and the following gifts for veterans:
    • Certificate
    • “Items of Honor Bag”
      • A small star from a retired flag
      • A rose
      • A poem
      • A flag pin
  • Where: Lincoln Park in Kettering
  • When: 11 a.m.

National Veterans Memorial and Museum

  • National Veterans Memorial and Museum is partnering with VetsAid to present special guest speakers:
    • Joe Walsh, Gold Star Family Member, founder of VetsAid and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend (The James Gang, Eagles and more)
    • Drew Carey, U.S Marine Corps Veteran and host of “The Price is Right”
    • David Kim, U.S. Army (Retired), “Military Times” Veteran of the Year and CEO of the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation
  • Free tickets are available online for in-person attendance. The ceremony will also be available for live-stream on their Facebook and YouTube where it will remain for later viewing.

Some businesses may require a form of military identification. Examples of qualifying IDs are:

  • U.S. Uniformed Services ID card or U.S. Uniformed Services Retired ID card
  • Any veterans’ organization membership card (VFW, American Legion, etc.)
  • Military commendation, leave or earnings statement
  • Photograph in uniform
  • Servicepeople in uniform
