LISTEN: Driver calls 911 to report wrong-way driver in Fairborn; crash avoided

FAIRBORN — Police in Fairborn released 911 calls to WHIO-TV about a suspected drunk driver who entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 675 near Fairborn High School headed north.

One caller said, “I just witnessed a drunk driver getting on the highway going the wrong way.”

The wrong-way driver was captured on a camera by the Ohio Department of Transportation camera network on entering I-675 near the high school on Sunday night.

Police said they received multiple 911 calls from people reporting the wrong-way driver.

In the video, another driver flashed their headlights at the wrong-way driver, who was going by slowly on the shoulder of the highway.

Police said officers spotted the wrong-way driver, who was driving without headlights on, driving in the middle of both southbound lanes of the highway.

The video also shows a police officer perform the traffic stop.

The Ohio Department of Transportation reviewed camera footage and spotted the driver in the area of the Dayton-Yellow Springs Road from 10:01 to 10:05 p.m.

A Fairborn police case report does not identify the wrong-way driver or show any names of people arrested, however OVI is listed as a possible offense.

Police said drivers on the highway were swerving onto the shoulders of the highway to avoid a crash.

The driver was stopped and arrested near the Ohio 235 exit on the highway.
