NEW MADISON — Several fire departments worked to extinguish a 2-alarm fire in Darke County Wednesday afternoon.

Around 12:35 p.m. New Madison Fire Department was called to 1000 block of Braffetsville Street to reports of a fire.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found “extensive fire” and flames coming out of openings of the home, according to New Madison Assistant Fire Chief Chris Pearson.

“It was never, ever the intent to go in, it was a defensive posture the entire time,” Pearson said.

Pearson said a large response was called from neighboring fire crews due to the need for manpower and water supply.

Firefighters did encounter ammunition that went off in the home due to the fire, something Pearson said isn’t uncommon.

“Some we don’t want to encounter, but it’s not infrequent,” Pearson said.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Pearson said.

We are working to learn what started the fire and the damages it caused.
