Fire reduces Springfield garage to ‘pile of rubble’

SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE @ 5:18 a.m.:

Fire officials are looking for the cause of a fire that reduced a garage to a “pile of rubble,” according to firefighters on the scene.

According to fire fighters, the garage and house where the fire was located were both vacant, and the fire had largely burned itself down by the time they arrived.

In a video taken by a resident in the area, a large pillar of smoke can be seen rising above the houses as people try to force their way into the vacant house. Burning debris can be seen falling from the sky and smashing on the neighboring home’s roof.

INITIAL REPORT:

Springfield fire crews are on scene of a garage fire in the 400 block of Willard Avenue.

Initial reports said that there was a large fire in a detached garage behind the house.
