Crews were called to the 4100 block of Amston Drive just before 9 a.m. and reported smoke was coming from the structure.

The occupants of the unit where the fire started and a neighboring one were able to safely evacuate, however one dog did not and died in the fire, investigators said.

Damage to the units will force the occupants of both apartments to be displaced, firefighters said. The American Red Cross was requested to help them seek housing assistance.

The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation, firefighters said.
