UPDATE @ 4:11 a.m.

Five crews were on the scene for a “stubborn” fire inside a vacant house in the 100 block of Sherman Street.

"We had fire on the first and second floor and blowing out of the back of the house,"

said Fred Marx, a Dayton Fire Department district chief. "... We had plenty of fire for everybody."

Firefighters believe the fire started on the first floor and extended to the second floor and into the attic area.

The utilities were disconnected inside the vacant home.

"We were lucky we had vacant lots on both sides, so we had no exposure to inhabited houses," Marx said.

The fire is under investigation.

The Sherman Street fire is one of several in the Linden Avenue area that have occurred this year, according to Marx.

Two occurred on New Year’s Eve. All were vacant structure fires.
