Upon arrival, crews found a house with fire in the basement that had “ballooned up” and spread to the second floor and the attic, according to District Chief Chris Kinzler.

The homeowner was the only one inside the house, and was woken up by the smoke and able to get out of the house, according to Kinzler. No one was injured.

The homeowner told fire crews that he did not have smoke detectors in the house.

“We have seen people die in a lot less drastic situations than this, he’s a lucky man to be alive tonight,” Kinzler said. “Most people don’t wake up, it’s the smoke, the carbon monoxide that gets them.”

The home was considered a total loss and an emergency demolition was ordered.
