Dumpster fire spreads, burns chain steakhouse in Vandalia

VANDALIA — A dumpster fire grew and burned a part of a Vandalia business later Saturday night.

Vandalia fire, assisted by Riverside and Englewood fire in a mutual aid response, were dispatched at around 11:35 p.m. to the 6400 block of Miller Lane on reports of a fire, Vandalia dispatch told News Center 7.

When firefighters arrived, they found a Longhorn Steakhouse partially in flames after a dumpster fire grew and spread to the business, dispatch informed. The cause of the dumpster fire remained under investigation during the time of questioning.

A full evacuation of the business was ordered until the fire was extinguished.

There were no reported injuries; however, medics were sent as part of the procedure with all occupied structure fires, dispatch said. No transports to local hospitals were made.

News Center 7 crews went to the scene and captured video of the smoke emanating from the roof of the steakhouse. Firefighters were scene using a ladder to extinguish the fire from above.

Vandalia fire led the investigation into the incident.

A correction was made to the initial story. The story stated that the business was located in Butler Township. However, after contacting local dispatches, News Center 7 confirmed that the business lied within Vandalia’s jurisdiction.
