Firefighters from the City of Vandalia Division of Fire were dispatched to an apartment fire at the 100 block of Imperial Court just after 8 p.m., Vandalia Fire Chief Chad Follick told News Center 7 at the scene.

Medics transported two people to Miami Valley Hospital, one with life-threatening injuries.

One apartment has been damaged in the complex and the person living in that apartment has life-threatening injuries.

Follick said there was a smoke detector in the hallway that indicated there was a fire but the one inside the damaged apartment was not working.

“Please, please, please, check your smoke detectors,” he said. “Do not take the batteries out. If you have issues taking the batteries out and need new batteries, call your local fire department most of them have programs that will help you with that.”

Mutual aid was provided by the Butler Township, Huber Heights, Englewood, and Clayton Fire Departments, Vandalia Fire posted on social media.

The fire is under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
