DAYTON — Rising gas prices are fueling challenges for both the Foodbank and its customers in Dayton and surrounding communities, leaders at the non-profit say.

“It’s definitely very stressful,” said Lauren Tappel, development and marketing manager at the Foodbank “In the grocery store with gas prices, really a lot of necessities…have become challenging.”

In the past 24 hours gas prices have jumped to over $4 per gallon locally in the Miami Valley, with many stations selling fuel for $4.09 for a gallon of unleaded. Diesel fuel has jumped so high it set a new average price in Ohio, selling for $4.76 per gallon, according to AAA.

Tappel said the Food Bank started seeing the impact on the prices they have to pay around the holidays

“We have over 60 retail partners in this area that we receive food donations from on weekly or bi-weekly basis,” Tappel said. “So, gas prices, that’s going to affect our budget.”

The Foodbank also says the higher gas prices will make it hard for their customers to get to them.

“Transportation can be a huge barrier for everyone,” Tappel said.

That’s where the approximately 30 mobile pantry events come in throughout Preble, Greene and Montgomery counties.

“There’s a way to have something closer in proximity to you so you don’t have to drive very far,” Tappel said.

The Foodbank also recommends using their proxy program, which allows for one car to pick up food for up to four households.
