Former site of Urbana University campus purchased

URBANA — The former site of Urbana’s University’s campus has been purchased by a group, including former Ohio State great and Wayne High School graduate Braxton Miller.

The 170-year-old campus is being acquired by the Pro Development Institute, according to the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce. The location will be transformed into a multi-sport professional athlete development institution.

The group said in a release that the institution would become the “first ever dual collegiate and professional pathway program that features its own leagues designed to maximize athletic growth and opportunities.”

The institute would be designed to maximize results and pave the way for success at the college and professional level, as well as life after sports.

The acquisition group also includes Paul Holyfield, founder of DNA Prep Academy in California; Paul Miller, of Charg1ng athletic brand; and Tramain Hall, founder of Enhance U Sports Performance Academy in Ohio. Other members of the group were not identified.

The site of the former campus included 115 acres, 22 buildings and a full-service academic and athletic campus.

Urbana University permanently closed two years ago, at the end of the 2020 Spring Semester.

News Center 7 previously reported that university officials said the coronavirus pandemic “added a level of stress and uncertainty to Urbana’s prospects that make it impossible to sustain.”
