Fugitive sex offender found in Dayton

DAYTON — A fugitive sex offender wanted out of Illinois was found and arrested Thursday in Dayton, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Keanu C. Gibson, 23, was found hiding in a Palisades Drive bedroom closet.

Gibson was wanted out of Lake County, Illinois, for failure to appear in connection to a sex offense and burglary.

The sheriff’s office posted a flyer of Gibson on social media Dec. 5, stating that he was wanted on multiple warrants for charges, including criminal sexual abuse, violating the sex offender registry and burglary.

The total bond on Gibson’s charges was $2 million, according to the sheriff’s office.

They received a tip last week that Gibson had fled Illinois.

Working with the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes and Southern Ohio regions, the Lake County Sheriff’s Warrants Team determined that Gibson was hiding in a Dayton home on Palisades Drive.

On Thursday, U.S. Marshals went to the home in the 2000 block of Palisades Drive and heard movement in an upstairs bedroom.

They deployed a robot to check the room and found Gibson hiding in a closet.

Gibson was transported to Montgomery County Jail, where he’ll be held pending extradition hearings.

Gibson had been missing since he cut off his electronic monitoring device on Oct. 19.

“We are grateful for the community’s participation in our ‘Wanted Wednesday’ initiative,” said Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg. “Because of the community’s engagement and tips, we’ve apprehended several fugitives. This is another example of community partnerships helping to keep our neighborhoods safe.”
