Greenville HS teacher resigns, apologizes for ‘inappropriate behavior’

GREENVILLE — A Greenville High School teacher who resigned effective Christmas day apologized for “inappropriate behavior,” according to Greenville City Schools personnel records obtained by News Center 7 and the Dayton Daily News.

Stephen Eldred, an assistant/instructor for the district’s Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Program, was initially placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of “certain allegations against” Eldred, a Dec. 3 letter signed by Superintendent Douglas Fries read.

It was not clear what the nature of the investigation or allegations were.

Three days later, the district received a letter of resignation signed by Eldred.

“I would like to apologize to the Board of Education of Greenville City Schools for my inappropriate behavior, and I wish to do this to protect any adverse effects for Greenville City Schools, the Green Way Navy and the Navy,” the letter said.

A follow-up letter signed by Eldred was submitted Dec. 10.

“I wish to convey that I do not want to resign but am doing so under pressure and in the best interest of the school and the Green Wave Navy,” it said.

He said he did nothing involving a child nor anything illegal but offered no other details.

The letter also said that Eldred “cannot fight this” and that it would not “set the right example for the students I have taught.”

Eldred was hired by district in April 2015.

His personnel file did not show any previous discipline from the district.
