Gunman killed, officer wounded in Columbus police-involved shooting

A gunman was killed and a police officer was wounded in a Columbus, Ohio, officer-involved shooting during a confrontation at a hotel Thursday afternoon.

The shooting occurred when five police officers fired on a man who barged from a room at the Americas Best Value Hotel, on Sinclair Road, according to a statement Columbus Division of Police officials released late Thursday night.

According to the statement:

Officers were dispatched to the 4800 block of Sinclair Road just after 4:30 p.m. on a report of a man with a gun. The caller told police two men were arguing and one of the men had a gun. Officers arrived and received information that one of the men was seen at the hotel, which was nearby.

The officers went to the hotel, 4875 Sinclair Road, and while looking for the man gathered information that led them to one of the rooms. They learned a man in the room was a possible kidnapping suspect.

A witness told police the officers were met with gunfire when they tried to make contact with the man in the room. One sergeant and four officers returned fire, striking the man as he barged from the room. The man was pronounced dead at Grant Medical Center a short time later.

Police seized a handgun and rifle from the hotel.

One officer, who was shot in the leg, was treated at Riverside Methodist Hospital and released.

Police officials said they will not release the dead man's name publicly until his relatives have been notified. According to police officials, the man is 28 years old.

The names of the five officers involved have not been made public as of Thursday night.
