Police are mulling pursuing charges after a man, said to be distraught about the death of a friend, discharged a firearm Tuesday night from the window of his upstairs apartment on Peters Pike.
The gunshots rattled neighbors, who called police, Vandalia Sgt. Todd Flynn said.
The man, who lives with his girlfriend in the space they rent in the 9300 block of Peters Pike, grabbed a .38-caliber handgun and fired it three or four times toward a wooded area, Flynn said.
The man was upset about a friend who suffered a fatal overdose, the sergeant said.

Several police officers surrounded the residence because they weren't sure what was happening inside, Flynn said. They had been dispatched sometime after 10 p.m. on a shots-fired call.
The man, who is in his 20s, has been taken to a hospital to be evaluated, Flynn said, because "he was definitely under the influence."
Flynn said possible charges include discharge of a firearm within city limits and weapon possession while intoxicated.
A second medic unit was called for the girlfriend, who also is in her 20s. She complained of a possible miscarriage, but checked out OK and was allowed to return to the house, the sergeant said.
No injuries were reported.
