People noticed a man lying in the middle of the street near Selma Avenue and Tibbetts Road around 6 p.m. No one saw how he got there, but some of the first callers to dial 911 thought he might have been hit by a car.

“I don’t know what’s going on with him,” one 911 caller said. “He’s got blood coming up out of his mouth.”

The callers described the victim as an older gentleman in his 60s, but the next callers made it clear he was a victim of a crime.

“Somebody got shot at the corner of Selma and Tibbetts,” the 911 caller said.

Another caller said the man was shot in the face.

“He can’t move his face,” they told dispatchers. “Looks like he’s got a hole in his face.”

Those calls brought paramedics and police to the intersection. The man was flown to Miami Valley Hospital and, as reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, is said to be in serious but stable condition, according to police.

About two hours later, police called SWAT out to the scene, thinking someone involved in the shooting could be inside a home there.

“The SWAT team trucks, they had the RV over here, they had drones going up and down everywhere,” Michael Hawes said.

Hawes came to the scene on Thursday night to make sure his uncle was alright. He told News Center 7 that the entire area was blocked off for hours and the SWAT team did force their way into a home.

Police detained a man dressed only in underwear, but eventually released him. They’re still looking for the shooter.
