The crash was reported in the 3800 block of West Third Street near the AutoZone just before 11:45 a.m., according to initial reports.

“I was about 30 feet from where the accident happened, some of the scrap, nails, plastic, flew over here,” said Michael Bass, who witnessed the crash.

Bass said he was waiting for his bus and was surprised and startled by the crash.

“It was like the 4th of July, like two grenades at one time,” Bass said.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, the crash shut down Third Street, not just because of the wrecked vehicles but the massive police response due to the “officer in trouble call.”

Most of the crews soon cleared and the Dayton Traffic Services Unit began their investigation. They spoke with the woman who drove the Jeep.

Officers say their preliminary review indicates the Jeep’s driver appeared to try to turn left onto N. Decker Avenue, right in front of the officer.

Bass said the female officer got out of her vehicle pretty quickly after escaping her airbags.

“She walked out of the car and she went and checked on that car that is on the other side,” Bass said. “She went around there to check on them first, isn’t that something?”

The officer’s injuries are being described as non-life-threatening, a Dayton Police spokesperson confirmed.

The driver of the other vehicle involved refused treatment at the scene.
