A 50-year-old man, who lived at the house in the 4500 block of Richland Avenue, and a second non-resident of the house, a 35-year-old man died from their injuries after shots were fired around 7 a.m. The resident of the house died at the scene while the second man died from his injuries at an area hospital, Riverside police Maj. Matt Matt Sturgeon said during a Tuesday morning news conference.

The names of the men have not been released pending notification of family by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

A third victim shot, identified as a woman, has since been treated and released from an area hospital. The woman also lived at the house where the shooting happened and was the fiancée of the 50-year-old victim, Sturgeon said.

Police believe all people involved in Monday night’s shooting knew each other and the incident could have been either a drug transaction or attempted robbery, Sturgeon said. Police recovered during the investigation marijuana and a white powder substance that is still being analyzed at a regional crime lab.

“Either a drug deal gone bad or a planned robbery, but we’ll get the motive and intent once we get the phones downloaded a bit more, do some more follow up investigations as far as interviewing other people,” Sturgeon said.

A fourth person who police believe was in the house was not shot but fled the scene and police are looking to locate that person. Sturgeon called the fourth person a “person of interest” and asked for him to contact police to help in the investigation.

“We will track down the fourth person that was there. You know who you are, please come forward and talk to us,” he said.

Two different caliber guns were used during the shooting, however Sturgeon said it was too early in the investigation to determine who fired the shots.

“Its really too early to tell right now exactly who fired at each other. We have two firearms, two different sets of bullet wounds in people and two different calibers. So deduction says they fired at each other but we’re not going to jump to that conclusion yet,” Sturgeon said.

The woman who was shot is not currently facing any charges but Sturgeon added it was also too early in the investigation to make an official determination.

“Obviously whenever there is a death of this magnitude, two people were killed by gunfire, could she potentially face charges, sure. But right now its just too early to tell.”

Monday’s shooting is the first episode of gun violence and first homicides in Riverside in 2022, Sturgeon said.

Police did not have any previous interactions with people who lived at the Richland Avenue house, however police had contact with the 35-year-old man who died in the shooting.

Based on the information in the 911 call received by dispatchers, which Sturgeon described as a “chaotic situation,” police were first treating the incident as a possible hostage situation and delayed their response going inside the house to check on the victims. However officers were not threatened nor believed to be a target.

This is a developing story and more details will be added shortly.
