Record-breaking heavy rain floods roads, causing closures across the Miami Valley

Heavy rain flooded some area roads and parks across the Miami Valley Thursday morning and heavy rain has returned for the afternoon and evening.

Dayton broke a daily rainfall record with 1.22 inches of rainfall as of 5:15 p.m. Thursday, according to National Weather Service data. The record broke a more than 100 year-old record set back in 1910 when .95 inch of rain fell.

The rainfall prompted flood warnings and watches across the region.

  • Near Bellbrook, State Route 725 is closed in the area of Sackett Wright Park and Washington Mill Road due to high water, according to emergency dispatchers.
  • In Beavercreek Twp., Factory Road is closed south of Shakertown Road due to flooding, according to emergency dispatchers.
  • In Darke County, several roads closed Thursday afternoon due to high water, including Palestine-Union City Road between State route 571 and Palestine-Union City Road between Stingley and Ross roads.
  • In Clark County, deputies have closed southbound Spangler Road at Lower Valley Pike due to high water.
  • In Clark County, the I-70 WB exit to Medway at I-675 is closed.
  • News Center 7 spotted Livingston Avenue in Dayton under U.S. 35 closed around 10:30 a.m. as water covered the road there.

Highways were hampered by the rapid rain, prompting police and other workers to close lanes of U.S. 35 east near Abbey Avenue throughout much of the morning commute. I-75 also had issues in Moraine and Dayton, when police reported drainage problems on the highway that led to high water on the left lane of the highway through a construction zone.

Greene County Parks and Trails also were out early Thursday evaluating some of its popular parks. Glenn Thompson Park closed due to high water, and others may close as well.

“It’s very dangerous for them to come in, that’s why we close them up,” said Chief Ranger Darryl Hannah. “So they don’t get stuck in here and they don’t get washed away.”

The Chief Ranger said Narrows Reserve, Constitution Park and Mill Bridge Launch often flood anytime after several inches of rain.
