TROTWOOD — A Trotwood mother is sharing the story of her son who lost his right hand and badly damaged his left after a fireworks accident.
Kimberly Nelson said her 16-year-old Issiah Evans was at a friend’s house on July 5 when he saw a pile of trash with fireworks out on the street.
She said he decided to light the fireworks from that pile and they exploded in his hands.
According to Nelson, it left him with burns to his chest, face, and eyes in addition to the injuries to his hands.
She said the last week has been tough, Evans has gone through multiple surgeries after the accident, but he’s keeping in high spirits in the hospital.
“He just wants to get this over with just so he can start his journey because he looks at it as it was a mistake that he made, and now he’s going to have to move forward with it,” Nelson said.
Evans is also a football player at Trotwood-Madison High School with dreams of going to the NFL.
“He’s going to rebound from this so when this story comes out again you’re going to say ‘oh yeah that’s the young man from Trotwood and he’s going to be doing something tremendous that we all didn’t expect from him,’” Evans’ football coach Jeff Graham said.
He was already out his junior year because of an ACL injury, but Nelson said her son doesn’t plan on letting either injury get in the way of getting back on the field.
