High CO levels forces early dismissal at Clark-Shawnee middle/high school

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Clark County — UPDATE @ 11:55 a.m.: 

A carbon monoxide issue at the Clark-Shawnee middle/high school building was isolated to an issue with a boiler system and was not connected to ongoing construction, according to a district spokeswoman.

“It is confirmed to not be related to construction,” Clark-Shawnee Local Schools spokeswoman Megan Anthony said.

“This is an old boiler system in the northwest corner of the building, which is opposite of where construction is occurring.”

Students were evacuated from the building around 10:30 a.m. after the CO issue was discovered and will be dismissed early today.

There have been no reports of injuries or illnesses.

This is the second school to evacuate and dismiss early Monday due to emergencies. The Bethel Local Schools building in Miami County was evacuated and will also dismiss early after a small fire was extinguished in the basement of the school.

FIRST REPORT

Students at the Clark-Shawnee middle and high school building will be dismissed early Monday after the discovery of high carbon monoxide levels in the school, according to a social media post from the district.

A teacher reported a suspicious odor at the building before 10:30 a.m. Firefighters later determined there were high levels of carbon monoxide in the building, the district said in the Facebook post.

Students were evacuated from the school and were sent to the bleachers of the football field.

There have been no initial reports of injuries or illnesses.

Student drivers will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Bus riders will be dismissed once the buses arrive at the school, according to the district.
