High winds cause downed power lines, road hazards across Miami Valley

MIAMI VALLEY — Winds over 60 miles per hour have been reported in parts of the Miami Valley and they are causing damage across the region.

Just before 2 a.m. Thursday, more than 18,000 people were without power in the area, according to the AES outage map.

Preble County has reported more than 5,800 without power.

Preble County dispatch said that they had two major areas where powerlines were down.

The first was in the area of U.S. Route 127 and State Route 726.

The second area, according to dispatch, was the 2500 block of SR-726 where lines were down and sparking on trees.

Lines were also being reported down and sparking in the roadway in the 200 block of Fairview Avenue in Greenville, according to emergency scanner traffic, causing many in the area to be without power.

Montgomery County also reported a large number of people without power, with more than 5,700 reported early Thursday morning.

Montgomery County dispatch said that they weren’t major areas where lines were down, the damage was really just “scattered”.

According to the AES outage map, a large portion of those without power appeared to be near the area of Wright State University in Fairborn.

But this is is an estimation and not exact.

Crews are working to restore power to the Miami Valley, we will update this story as we learn more.
