Crews arrived on scene and were met by another hiker who led them to the injured person.

It was found that the hiker had decided to go for a walk on the lower trail when they fell.

The patient was taken from the trails in serious condition to the trauma center at Kettering Health Network Soin Medical Center.

With warmer weather approaching it’s important to remember hiking safety.

The National Park Service offers a few safety tips for those deciding to plan a hike:

  • Be Weather Ready - Check the weather before you head out on your hike. If conditions in the park are not ideal, don’t take the chance.
  • Pick the right trail for you and your group - Pick a trail that everyone can successfully complete and enjoy safely.
  • Leave a Trip Plan - Give details such as where you will be walking, contact information, when you plan to arrive and return, and who is coming with you to a trusted friend for family member who is not going on the hike.
  • Have an Emergency Plan - This plan details what to do if you or someone you are hiking with becomes lost or injured.
  • Have a way to communicate - Do not rely on your cell phone because there may not be cellular coverage and reception. Consider having a personal locator beacon.
