New Carlisle resident Chris Gordon shared his opinion on this change with News Center 7.

“Nowadays with the way things are going? I don’t I don’t blame them for doing that. This kind of crazy stuff happens all over the country,” Gordon said.

The district said the safety of their students and staff is paramount.

News Center 7 obtained a copy of the approval from the board meeting on Tuesday.

“The district believes that volunteer administrators, teachers, and school support staff with appropriate training are capable to defend and protect students and that such protection is essential in creating and preserving a proper learning environment;” it reads in part.

Gordon said he’s split on this decision.

“I’m 50/50. I mean, I think it’s a shame that has come to that where they feel like they need to be armed. But I can see the other side of it as well,” he said.

The approved program is optional for all staff members.

Those who volunteer would have to meet the following requirements:

  • Complete a 24-hour training with the Ohio School Safety Center
  • Pass a psychological exam and background check
  • Complete at least 8 hours of training to be recertified every year

School resource officers will be the only people allowed to carry guns in Tecumseh School District buildings.

Any teacher who volunteers for this program must keep the firearm locked in a safe in their classroom.
