SPRINGFIELD — Customers of a Springfield dry cleaning business say they were left high and dry last week after the store suddenly closed, with their clothes still inside the shuttered business.

“I took a suit and two shirts there Tuesday, told me to pick them up Friday at 2:00. Come here at two o’clock and the doors are shut,” Lee Smith of Springfield told News Center 7′s John Bedell Wednesday.

Smith said he’s used Rose City Cleaners for years with no problems, until the issues last week. He tried calling the business Monday but only got an answering machine but he was back at the business Tuesday to try and get his clothes back.

“Somebody was here yesterday. I got one suit coat is all I got back,” Smith said.

But Smith said he’s still missing items, and was told to come back Wednesday only to find the place shuttered again with a sign on the door saying “store closing no drop-off pick up only.”

And Smith has learned he’s not the only person still battling to get his items back.

“They got a sign on the door that says closing. They’re closed! No notification, nothing like that,” Preston Hampton of Springfield said.

Hampton said he’s also been a long-time customer and the business has a pair of his pants that he can’t get back right now.

“This is not like them. It’s not like them to do that. And of course a lot of people have been coming back, they’ve been here and they’re frustrated,” Hampton said.

News Center 7 has attempted to contact the store’s owner by phone for comment and we’re awaiting a response.

The owner took to social media Wednesday afternoon saying that their last day of business will be May 5.

“Since our Covid shutdown in April 2020, we have not been able to rebound enough to the point of positive income. We have fought hard to last this long but cannot sustain this pace,” the post read.

The owner went on to say that they have reached out to other cleaners in neighboring areas to see if they would have interest in continuing services as their location, but has had “zero luck.”

Items need to be picked up before May 5. All items remaining on that day will be donated, according to the post.
