Initial Ohio unemployment claims up 21 percent from last week

Ohio’s initial unemployment claims were up compared to last week, with 21,263 initial claims being filed last week.

The number is a 21 percent increase compared to last week’s number of 17,531 initial claims.

Continued unemployment claims did drop by 4 percent this week to 161,221.

Since the pandemic began, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has distributed more that $7.1 billion in unemployment compensation to more than 833,000 Ohioans.

In addition to traditional unemployment payments, the state also has sent more than $6.8 billion to more than 656,00 Ohioans through the state’s pandemic unemployment assistance program.
