Troopers ID 2 dead after U-Haul slams into back of semi

BEAVERCREEK TOWNSHIP — UPDATE @ 3:50 p.m. :

Troopers have identified the two people killed after a crash on US-35 in Greene County Saturday morning.

Around 8:45 a.m. Ohio State Highway Patrol was called to US-35 and Valley Road for a crash.

An initial investigation found that a semi-trailer was stopped at a red light at US-35 eastbound and North Valley Road when a U-Haul pulling a U-Haul trailer ran into the back of it.

The driver of the U-Haul, identified as Val Vern McLuff, 78, and his passenger Veronica Smith, 64, both of Wisconsin, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a media release.

A dog also died in the crash.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not injured.

State troopers told our News Center 7 crew on the scene that high speed and drugs or alcohol were not suspected to be factors in the crash.
