SPRINGFIELD — A middle school in Springfield went on a temporary lockdown Thursday afternoon after an intruder entered the building.
Cherie Moore, Springfield City School District’s Director of Communications, said in a statement that the incident was a Hayward Middle School.

The unidentified individual entered the building as a parent was departing just after 3 p.m. The school’s Assistant Principal met with the individual as police were notified.
“Anytime a school is alerted to a situation such as this, it is standard practice to move to a secured facility status to keep all students safely in their classrooms until the matter can be resolved,” Moore said.

Moore commended the teachers and students for their “swift reaction doing exactly what they have practiced.”
The incident did not impact the school’s dismissal time.
