Logan AC and Heat Services is prepared for the uptick in calls they expect over the next few days as the Miami Valley gets the most extreme winter weather we’ve seen this season.

It’s a good idea to have your AC and heating systems checked periodically, Dayton resident Chris Dorsey does just that.

“They do the air conditioner in the spring, furnace in the fall,” Dorsey said. “The biggest thing that I’m thinking about is just reliability. You don’t want to lose heat when it’s, you know, two degrees.”

Chris Cantrell, a service manager at Logan AC and Heat Services, said heater problems are the number one call they get this season.

“Make sure that your filter is clean in your system,” Cantrell said. “If it can’t breathe, it’s not going to work properly, it’s going to run a lot harder.”

Cantrell says the best practice is to change the filter monthly. He also recommends checking to make sure the vents and pipes around the furnace are cleared.

The furnace can often be the most expensive appliance in the house. An average replacement is $15,000 to $20,000.

So, those twice a year check-ups are paying off for Dorsey.

“I’m sure that it probably goes a long way towards making it last, too,” Dorsey said.

Space heaters can also help keep your house warm, but they can be the cause of fires if not used properly. Make sure any space heater you plan on using can’t overheat and has protections if it tips over.
