‘Pillar of our community;’ Greene Co. township trustees remember colleague killed in Tuesday crash

WEST CARROLLTON — The Montgomery County Coroner’s office has identified a Jamestown man as the victim in Tuesday’s afternoon’s deadly crash in West Carrollton.

Mark Campbell, 44, has been identified has the victim in the crash at the intersection of Dixie and Dryden Road, the coroner’s officer said Thursday afternoon.

Campbell was a Ross Township trustee, the trustees office told News Center 7.

Trustee members told News Center 7′s Mike Campbell Thursday they had just seen Mark Campbell at a meeting Monday night.

“We were discussing on where we were headed as a township an different things,” said Mike Brown, Ross Township Trustee. “We’ve done so much in the couple of years for the township and it’s grown.”

Brown says he is in shock about the death of Mark Campbell.

“I was my daughter’s (soft)ball game, and they got a phone call and they related to me,” he said. “You just turn into shock. “I’m in shock and still in shock.”

Gary Bogan, Ross Township’s fiscal officer, said Mark Campbell was the trustee’s social media person.

“He knew how to connect with the younger upcoming residents of the community and really was engaged and a pillar of our community,” he told News Center 7. “We were just together Monday and just how quick someone can walk out the door and that’s the end of it.”

Bogan said their focus is on supporting the victim’s family.

“Absolutely, that’s 100%,” he told Mike Campbell. “We just live in a community and we’re so lucky to live in this rural community to have the support we have out here.”

James Spahr, Ross Township trustee, said everyone remains in shock.

“I was absolutely in shock on the whole thing. I just felt like I could collapse,” he told Mike Campbell. “We’re still in shock and so saddened and everything. Such a wonderful young man.”

Spahr said he brought a different style to Township Board of Trustees.

“He’d been on for about 15,16 months and he had a little different style,” he said. “A young guy, much younger than us, and new ideas and things we needed in this township. I thought this is a good thing, a young guy like this.”

Spahr said Ross Township is a tight knit community.

“Everybody in Ross Township knows each other,” he said. “Lots of great people out there that they care a lot about each other. Everyone’s suffering.”

Ross Township Trustee told News Center 7′s Mike Campbell they will be rallying around Mark Campbell’s widow and two elementary school age sons.

Tuesday’s crash at the intersection of Dixie and Dryden Road remains under investigation by West Carrollton Police.

“It’s going to be a lengthy investigation,” said Chris Fairchild, West Carrollton Police. “We’re getting cooperation from some witnesses that were there. We would encourage the community to reach out if they were anywhere near the scene.”

No charges have been filed at this time.
