He told News Center 7 that he uses the same ATM every day because it doesn’t have surcharges.
“I just realized that the machine was very new, all the buttons were new, all the buttons were very vibrant,” Shrefler said.
Shrefler asked store employees for a tool to remove what he suspected was a counterfeit keyboard.
In two minutes, he got it off and saw wires dangling off the scammer tool.
“Not even three minutes in, I have it pried up, I have it and holding it in the air and everybody’s jaws hit the floor,” Shrefler said.
Shrefler went online and found similar skimmer devices, as he couldn’t photograph his discovery.
On Friday, News Center 7 crews went to the CVS and saw that the ATM had an out-of-order sign.
Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith said he’s seen these devices before.
“Do not use your debit card, that’s the real danger, they get the password off your card and then they have access to your account,” Keith said.
News Center 7 reached out to CVS corporate offices and the ATM vendor to learn how many people may have used the skimmer.
